Can I still buy QuickBooks Desktop in the U.S.?
For most small businesses, not as a new customer. Intuit says it stopped selling new U.S. subscriptions to QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Mac Plus after September 30, 2024. Intuit also says existing subscribers can keep renewing and still get security updates, product updates and support. (Intuit, as of Oct 7, 2026)
Two more points from Intuit:
QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise is still sold. Intuit says new and existing customers can still buy or renew Enterprise subscriptions. (Intuit, as of Oct 7, 2026)
No more one-time licenses. Intuit says it no longer offers non-subscription (lifetime or perpetual) versions of QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier and Mac. (Intuit, as of Oct 7, 2026)
Is QuickBooks Desktop 2023 still supported?
No. Intuit says QuickBooks Desktop 2023 was discontinued after May 31, 2026. That includes Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus and Enterprise Solutions 23.0. According to Intuit, discontinued versions lose live technical support and Intuit services such as Desktop Payments and online bank feeds, and they no longer get critical security updates. (Intuit, as of Oct 7, 2026)
Moving to Online isn't your only option. On the same page, Intuit describes upgrading to QuickBooks Desktop Plus 2024 or Enterprise 24.0 as a path for existing subscribers. We'll talk through both options with you on the consult.
Should I move to QuickBooks Online or stay on Desktop?
It depends on how your business runs. Here's what we look at with you:
Which QuickBooks® Desktop version and edition you’re on now, and whether it’s still supported
How you work: who needs access, from where, and which apps or bank connections you rely on
How big and how clean your company file is
What has to keep working on day one, such as invoicing, bill pay and bank connections
You get a straight recommendation. If staying on Desktop is the better fit for now, we'll tell you.
Should I clean up my QuickBooks Desktop file before moving to QuickBooks Online?
Usually, yes. A messy file moves its mess with it. Intuit's own guide lists prep steps before you move, including these (Intuit, as of Oct 7, 2026):
Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.
Check the file size. Intuit says the Total Targets count should be below 4,000,000, or the data needs to be condensed first.
Verify the file, and rebuild the data if needed.
Make sure the company file is saved locally on your computer, not only with a hosting provider.
The same Intuit guide says the window to move your Desktop data depends on how your QuickBooks Online account was set up. It gives 90 calendar days if you signed up yourself, and 180 if your accountant signed you up. That's worth knowing before you open a new QuickBooks Online account.
We check your file's condition on the consult. Any cleanup it needs before the move is part of the migration scope we confirm with you.
What doesn't move from Desktop to Online?
Intuit publishes a detailed list of the features, lists, reports and transactions that do and don't move, and it notes that your books may look different after you switch. A few examples from that page: budgets aren't recreated in QuickBooks Online, bank connections have to be set up again, existing users have to be invited into QuickBooks Online, and memorized reports and the audit trail don't move. Intuit also notes that accrual-basis reports should match, while cash-basis reports may not. (Intuit, as of Oct 7, 2026)
Read Intuit's full list for your own file. On the consult, we go through what matters for your business.
