How it works

Margin % = (price − cost) ÷ price × 100. Markup % = (price − cost) ÷ cost × 100. Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ (price − cost). A $40 item sold at $100 has a 60% margin but a 150% markup.

Who it's for

Profit margin for products, restaurants and dropshipping. Restaurant profit margin: include ingredients and portion waste in cost. Products: include packaging and inbound freight. Dropshipping: include supplier price, shipping and payment/app fees in cost.

FAQ

What is the difference between margin and markup? Margin is profit as a share of the selling price. Markup is profit as a share of cost. The same sale always shows a higher markup than margin. How do I find a price from a target margin? Divide cost by (1 minus the margin as a decimal). For a 60% margin on a $40 cost: 40 ÷ 0.4 = $100.
